Kate’s Greats are awards given to movies, TV shows, and music that the author has viewed and/or listened to over the past month. These awards may celebrate underrated, overlooked, or obscure moments of pop culture that may not otherwise get the attention they deserve. Other times, they will celebrate the buzziest pop culture–but will always have a fresh take. Award categories may include, but are not limited to, ‘Goofiest Thriller’ and ‘Tiniest Mustache’ (the latter of which Timothée Chalamet wins by a landslide). May the best, worst, boldest, and weirdest win.
Best SNL Cut for Time Sketch: A Guy and His Girlfriend Who’s Always Cold
SNL has had a lot of hilarious skits this year have been cut for time. Among them include the catchy “Mom’s Camera Roll” with Teyana Taylor and Ben Marshall’s Jack Harlow impression which was so accurate his aunt thought it was him. My favorite this past month has been “A Guy and His Girlfriend Who Is Always Cold” because I am definitely the girl who is always cold. But the highlight of this skit is an unhinged Mikey Day, who frantically keeps taking off his seemingly million layers to warm his girlfriend up, only to reveal a tattoo of Weekend Update co-anchor Colin Jost’s wife Scarlett Johansson at the end. Colin’s reaction is priceless; they definitely didn’t tell him about the reveal beforehand. More of this energy, please!

Best Physical Comedy: Daniel Radcliffe Jumping Over a Car, The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins
Daniel Radcliffe must’ve learned a thing or two about physical comedy with all the broomstick flying he did in the Harry Potter films, because the way he seemingly glides over the hood of a car to hide from his love interest, played by Megan Thee Stallion, is top tier. Reggie Dinkins might be lower in the TV ratings than other shows, but it’s certainly high on my list of TV shows from this year, and that’s in part to the energy Daniel Radcliffe brings to the show and his chemistry with the always hilarious Tracy Morgan.

Best Celeb Couple Sighting at Coachella: Katy Perry and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
Every popstar I know and love is absolutely thriving in relationships right now. Taylor and Travis are engaged. So are Harry Styles and Zoë Kravitz, which was news so shocking I nearly dropped my phone. And Katy Perry and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, though not engaged, are still thriving, attending Coachella together and having a blast. Katy Perry’s photo dump on Instagram gave us insight into their time at the festival: there’s Katy and Justin eating together. Katy and Justin holding hands. And my personal favorite, Katy Perry jamming out to a Justin Bieber song while Justin (Trudeau) lightly nods his head in the background. Maybe all three couples will make appearances at the Met Gala? A girl can dream!

Most Wholesome Trailer: Little House on the Prairie reboot
Being a bookworm, of course I read the Little House on the Prairie Series as a child, so imagine my delight when Netflix announced it was making a reboot of the book series that was also a TV show in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Upon the teaser being released, I was also shocked by the fact that PA HAS A BEARD!!! JUST LIKE THE BOOKS!!! In the original, series star Michael Landon allegedly didn’t want a beard because it would obscure his face from being recognizable after his years on Bonanza (hey, I respect the personal branding!). But now the new Charles Ingalls, played by Luke Bracey, has embraced the beard. Hopefully Netflix can successfully resurrect another book series from my childhood–their Babysitter’s Club TV show was excellent (and cancelled too soon!)

Best Season Finale: Scrubs
FINALLY. Finally, Scrubs has erased the past mistakes of ending on a dud of a season with something nostalgic, tear-jerking, and hopeful all at once. Much like the Curb Your Enthusiasm series finale making up for the Seinfeld finale after years of disappointment thinking, that’s how it ends????, Scrubs has done the same. Season 9 in 2010 was an odd re-tool with an abrupt ending that never really worked. Season 10 felt like a homecoming, made even more poignant by Dr. Cox’s return in the final episodes, now becoming JD’s patient after he’s diagnosed with a rare disease. Honestly, I would have accepted the ending if it was cancelled, even if I was still devastated–but now I don’t even have to worry about that, because Scrubs was renewed for season 11! The Bill Lawrence TV empire reigns supreme.
