Kate’s Greats: September 2026

Kate Jakubowski

If someone wears a Chad Powers mask for Halloween, they’re winning scariest costume.

Kate’s Greats are awards given to movies, TV shows, and music that the author has viewed and/or listened to over the past month. These awards may celebrate underrated, overlooked, or obscure moments of pop culture that may not otherwise get the attention they deserve. Other times, they will celebrate the buzziest pop culture–but will always have a fresh take. Award categories may include, but are not limited to, ‘Goofiest Thriller’ and ‘Tiniest Mustache’ (the latter of which Timothée Chalamet wins by a landslide). May the best, worst, boldest, and weirdest win.

Best Idea for a Halloween Costume: Chad Powers masks from Chad Powers

The more I think about it, the more I know that Glen Powell would’ve been absolutely great in the 2017 heist film Baby Driver, particularly the scene where they don Mike Meyers-style masks in a robbery. Powell loves a good disguise, and in season 2 of Chad Powers, we’re layering disguises on top of disguises, with Powell not only buried under layers of prosthetics as his football alter ego Chad Powers but also donning a terrifying Chad Powers mask to further hide his true identity as disgraced football player Russ Holliday on the show. It’s genius, hilarious, and also incredibly haunting. If someone gets their hands on one of these masks for Halloween, they’ll certainly win scariest costume.

Funniest Instagram: Owen Thiele Getting Stuck at the Airport

If you haven’t watched Adults, you’re missing out on a million laughs. Basically a raunchier, Gen-Z coded version of Friends, Adults follows 5 besties living in a house together–including Anton, played by Owen Thiele. Anton is my favorite character–he’s outgoing to a fault, making so many friends he has over 4000 unread text messages. Thiele is also basically Anton in real life, as during a flight that made an emergency landing in Albuquerque he befriended a bunch of strangers and went to Dave and Busters with them. Honestly that’s the dream.

Eeriest Trailer: Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial starring Andrew Garfield

Is Andrew Garfield the king of starring in movies about the architects of modern technology and social media? First, he played Eduardo Saverin, Mark Zuckerberg’s friend-turned-foe in The Social Network, and now he’s playing Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. The entire teaser for Artificial is intriguing, depicting Altman walking from his car to his house and into a gun safe that is seemingly hidden underground. With its eerie, minimalist score and impressive cast (Ike Barinholz as Elon Musk, yes please!), I almost wonder if this will be better than The Social Network’s upcoming sequel, The Social Reckoning, which does not feature Garfield. Perhaps this is the one of the more intriguing questions heading into awards season.

Weirdest Fever Dream: The Cold Open of RJ Decker Season 2

Dancing with the Stars is going into overtime advertising itself this season–so much so that they essentially shoe-horned product placement into the show following its premiere, RJ Decker, by having pros Jenna Johnson and Val Chmerkovskiy dancing in a flash mob orchestrated by none other than Bachelor star and season 33 DWTS champion Joey Graziadei, whose character pickpockets valuable items by organizing pop-up dances. The entire opening sequence is honestly baffling, but Scott Speedman leads RJ Decker with such an easy charisma that I’ll excuse their jump-the-shark moment for now.

Best Comeback: Sid on Slow Horses

Apple TV via YouTube

I have held a grudge with Slow Horses since they seemingly killed off River Cartwright’s (Jack Lowden) love interest Sid Baker (Olivia Cooke) in season 1. It just didn’t make any sense!!! WHY????!!!?! Well, I am happy to report in season 6 Sid makes her shocking return–apparently she didn’t die after all!!! Now, I still have some catching up to do on the show so I haven’t seen anything beyond the trailer announcing this news. But if anything happens to Sid this time around, I will rage quit similar to how I rage quit Will Trent this past season with the deaths of Amanda and Seth. TV shows, stop killing off good characters!
