My biography would be entitled “perfectly imperfect.” As someone who has struggled with perfectionism I have learned that not everything in life can be perfect (spoiler alert!!), and not everything can go as planned. And that spontaneity, the mistakes we make, and the chaos that surrounds us is part of what makes life so beautiful.
There are many TV and film characters that are perfectionists too—three that cross my mind are Amy Santiago (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Sheldon (The Big Bang Theory), and Morgan Gillory (High Potential). In the finale of The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon confides in Penny that he is overwhelmed by the change surrounding him. Penny comforts him by telling him that she has watched him change since they met and that change is a universal constant. This speaks to Sheldon not just scientifically but also to his personal life as he’s gone on to get a girlfriend, then engaged, then married.
All these changes are inevitable, and though change is scary and unpredictable, it is beautiful, and this applies to perfection as well. Life is imperfect—and I wouldn’t want it any other way, because if everything went as planned, life would be pretty boring.
