The Trailer Detective: The Abandons Has SO MANY Hats

Kate Jakubowski

Abandoning fashion it is not.

Winter is slowly creeping upon us, which means for a chilly midwestern state like Wisconsin, it is officially hat weather. Netflix understood the assignment of finding the perfect hat, and delivered an amazing trailer filled to the brim (pun intended) with a throng of fashionable caps. No, it’s not a new fashion competition show, nor is it a retrospective documentary chronicling every confounding hat choice Carrie Bradshaw made throughout the Sex and the City franchise. It’s a new drama, a western called The Abandons, starring Lena Headey, Gillian Anderson, and a literal army of hats:

The show follows Headey’s Fiona Nolan and Anderson’s Constance Van Ness as they fight over land in the mid-19th century…and who has the largest hat collection. Well, maybe the last one isn’t a main part of the plot, but hats are surely the talk of the town where they live in Angel’s Ridge, because it’s not just Headey’s and Anderson’s characters that are seeming to be competing in Who Wore It Best: Hat Edition. Everyone on the show at one point or another in the trailer seems to be wearing a hat, and the number of hats the wardrobe department has isn’t the only thing that’s stacked. The cast includes Love, Simon’s Nick Robinson, Space Force’s Diana Silvers, and MacGyver’s Lucas Till, which is great for me as I was a big fan of the MacGyver reboot (and am still bummed it didn’t get the sixth season it deserved!)

Between all the star power in the cast, it’s important to have a hat that fits everyone–sort of like how New York City was the fifth character on Sex and the City, hats are given their own spotlight on this show. Let’s take a look:

Right away, within the first seven seconds of the trailer, we have Constance sporting a black, wide-brimmed hat as she talks about pursuing Fiona’s land out of the need for survival, not greed.

Then we have Fiona looking back at Constance with skepticism in her eye, wearing what looks like a slightly lighter and narrower-brimmed hat:

Next, we have Lucas Till, looking exactly the same as his time on MacGyver but with period clothing and a cowboy hat (Mac would never, unless he had to cosplay as Indiana Jones to figure out to stop a rolling boulder with mathematical equations, duct tape and paper clip):

From the trailer, it seems that Till is a part of Constance Van Ness’ clan, who is trying to take away Fiona’s land. Furthermore, it appears that Fiona has adopted “abandoned souls” into her own clan. With Fiona and Constance fighting over land to protect their kins…it looks like we have some family feuding on our hands!!!

Which, naturally, means we have to have a super dramatic shot of everyone pointing guns at each other (while wearing hats, of course):

And then people chasing after each other on horses (also while wearing hats):

Now, there are a couple other people with hats I have not covered. This includes Nick Robinson as Elias Teller, who is wearing a slightly weathered hat:

Lamar Johnson as Albert Mason, wearing a super fashionable brimmed hat:

And Natalia del Riego as Lilla Belle, with a hat similar to Elias’:

It looks like the three of them are a part of Fiona’s adopted family. So is Diana’s Silver’s Dahlia Teller, though interestingly enough she is not wearing any sort of hat throughout the trailer:

I am already obsessed with this show and cannot wait until it comes out December 4. I have previously blogged about hats on Law and Order: Organized Crime and And Just Like That, so it is obviously important to write about. I wonder if the hats in The Abandons are in any way symbolic of the character’s personalities or alliances with Constance and Fiona…or maybe allegiances will switch??? I’m not sure, but what I do know is that I will fully be seated for The Abandons, perhaps while wearing fedora or a baseball hat or maybe even a knitted hat…I have been crocheting a lot lately, so anything is possible. I just hope I look as cool wearing a hat in broad daylight as the cast of The Abandons looks in ominous shadows:

All seven episodes of the Abandons’ first season will premiere on December 4 on Netflix
